Alpine Adventure Dinner

January’s dinner features two mountain winegrowers from the North of Italy, Pojer e Sandri from Trentino, overlooking Lake Garda, and Manincor from the German-speaking South Tyrol, a region returned to Italy after WWI with roots going back to the Austrian Empire.
For fifty years, friends Mario Pojer and Fiorentino Sandri have pushed the envelope of high altitude winegrowing. Their efforts produced our first wine, Zero Infinito, which is made from Solaris grapes (a hybrid created in Germany in 1975) from one of the highest vineyards in Italy. Farmed on dry volcanic rock and simply fermented, Solaris gives us a gently effervescent aperitif with flavors of white peach and apricot.

As we sit for dinner we’ll enjoy the signature wine from Pojer e Sandri, Palai. These original Italian plantings of Muller-Thurgau are on one of Trentino’s steepest and most windy vineyards. Bedded on granite atop limestone, this wine brings hints of peach and lemon with concentrated minerality and delicate complexity.

From Trentino, we move up the Adige gorge to Terlan with the signature blend from Manincor, La Contessa. Fruity Pinot Bianco is balanced with ripe Chardonnay and a splash of refreshing Sauvignon (all grapes that arrived from France over two hundred years ago under Napoleon’s brief control of the region) then aged in oak forested from their land. Succulent and savory, this single-vineyard wine exemplifies terroir.

The first red wine of the evening is from the oldest Schiava (aka Vernatsch in German) vines in Italy, dating back to 1885. Manincor’s der Keil, “the wedge”, is their most expensive wine to make, yet it is one of their most affordable to drink. Taking dedication and age old farming, these fragile grapes bring a nuanced, quaffable companion for the duck.

Lastly, but by no means least, Manincor’s Il Conte, “hand-on-heart”, is a savory, vibrant blend of Lagrein, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the limestone, clay and gravel slopes surrounding the winery. Seductive with silky tannins, bright berry and notes of chocolate, Il Conte shows the warmth of the southeast facing slopes.

We look forward to our adventure through the Italian Alps.
